Philosophy

I have been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 7 years and have competed white through purple belt divisions. I train to incrementally rid fear from life by facing it in its physical and primal form. Although there will always be fear in life, it should not undermine purpose.

The mental clarity and feelings of happiness that follow a hard training session are nature's gift for letting the human body free to move in the way it was intended. In an artistic sense, we can view ourselves as the canvas in this art form, and the stress of physical combat as the paintbrush.

The famous Michelangelo believed the sculptor was a tool of God, not creating but simply revealing the powerful figures already contained in the marble. Michelangelo's task was only to chip away the excess, to reveal.[1] The same can be said to the potential of our own bodies and abilities as athletes and practitioners; just chipping away and removing the excess, which doesn’t work for us, to reveal our game and potential black belt version of ourselves.

Book a private lesson

*Due to my busy schedule, sorry, I am no longer giving free lessons. :(

For San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) locals, I’m offering a free 1-hour private lesson in either gi or nogi. I still love helping people fall in love with the art/sport, so feel free to reach out and we can work something out.

Deciding to try something like jiu jitsu for the first time is challenging, and joining a gym can be intimidating. For those more comfortable working 1-on-1, I love working with beginners, and hopefully helping you dip your toes in the waters that can change your life for the better! I’m also more than happy to be your buddy to a local gym for the first time, so you don’t feel as intimidated during your first class. Don’t hesitate to ask! And of course I’m biased, but you can’t go wrong with training at Subconscious BJJ if you are close to the North Hollywood area!

I love helping those struggling with situations I have answers to; it motivates me to find more answers to then be able to help more people. I have a weird, fun, and wacky style, but also a firm grasp of concepts and fundamentals, so for beginners I can go over my methods, and for slightly more advanced practitioners, I can go over my madness. ;)

Vahag is absolutely awesome! I contacted him about private lessons and was immediately hooked, training 1-on-1 no-gi for several months. He’s extremely dedicated and knowledgeable, but more importantly, he’s an excellent teacher. We worked on fixing some of my terrible BJJ habits and really internalized some of the core concepts that have taken my ground game to the next level. Without a doubt, the best BJJ training I’ve had in my career. No ego and no B.S…. Just a solid Jiu Jitsu teacher who is committed to your improvement. Highly recommend!

I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor than Vahag. I had zero experience in jiu jitsu, but Vahag made it feel comfortable and encouraged me every step of the way, with diligence and patience. He teaches you every move very thoroughly and drills until you have mastered the technique at hand. He really is an awesome jiu jitsu instructor and has so much to offer you as a learner, no matter what level of jiu jitsu you are at.

Whether you are interested in trying jiu jitsu for the first time, or you have years of experience and are working on getting rid of some bad habits, Vahag will make you feel comfortable and tailor his teaching to your level. He has a fun and playful style, and is always open to exploring new ideas. His approach to jiu jitsu is great for those looking to learn and play around. Give him a look if you want to learn a little jiu jitsu and have some fun while you’re doing it!

Vahag is not only a talented grappler, he is also an excellent instructor. I already had a respect for his experimental approach to jiu jitsu, but I didn’t expect for him to be able to easily understand and address the different issues I was facing due to our different body types and abilities. The techniques and strategies that Vahag introduced me to during our private lesson were very easy to implement and they have made a lasting impact on my jiu jitsu and I would encourage anyone to come to him if you want to improve your ground game!

I took a private class with Vahag shortly after I started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Needless to say, as what happens with most people, I felt completely helpless. But Vahag is a truly skilled and talented athlete, and is not only great at executing amazing technique, but also great at teaching that same vital technique to other bjj students. After only one class, I felt like I had a huge advantage and extremely helpful tools at my use. I cannot recommend a class with Vahag enough. He will be sure to give anyone’s bjj game the skills and advantage they need to get ahead.
